FLY FISH ROE

Flying fish roes are better known as tobiko (Japanese). Tobiko is popularly used by chefs in Japan and America in each dish, especially sushi. Tobiko is bigger than masago (capelin roes), but smaller than ikura (salmon roes). To add aesthetic value and taste, tobiko is often mixed with certain mixed ingredients. Green Tobiko has a spicy taste mixed with wasabi, black tobiko obtained from mixing with squid ink, red tobiko obtained from a mixture of red chili and tobiko yellow obtained from a mixture of yuzu (a type of mandarin orange) and ginger. Flying fish eggs have a crunchy, fresh and high protein, vitamin, cholesterol, omega-3 and omega-6 content that is good for the body.

In some countries, flying fish roe is believed to have medicinal effects and can improve blood circulation so that flying fish roes have high economic value. But compared to other types of caviar, tobiko is relatively not too expensive (around Rp. 60,000 / 100 grams).

LIFE CYCLE

Although the breeding season is throughout the year, flying fish cannot produce roes at any time. The peak period of flying fish egg production is between June-August, where upwelling often occurs, vertical currents carrying plankton rise. With abundant plankton, flying fish have sufficient food supplies for them and their offspring. This season too, many fishermen who hunt flying fish eggs with tubular tools made from rattan and straw which become a medium for female fish to lay eggs. This egg is then cleaned until the fiber content is less than 20% before it can be traded. With the hunting of adult flying fish and eggs too much, the flying fish population continues to shrink rapidly, because their regeneration system is disrupted.

Flying fish roes have threads (fibers) between roes that function to attach to the substrate that is used as a nest. Objects that are often used as flying fish to lay their eggs are coconut leaves / leaves that float or on Sargasso seaweed (Sargassum fluitans).

After laying and fertilizing, flying fish will leave their roes and the roes will hatch 24-36 hours after mating (usually at night). Flying fish children struggle to live independently without the supervision of their parents by eating plankton and away from predators until they are adults. Flying fish can live up to 5 years.

HOW "FLYING FISH" WAS SEWING ON SEA SURFACE

Their ability to float above sea level is one form of evolution to avoid predators. Utilizing a torpedo-like body shape, flying fish can accelerate in water and reach speeds of up to 56km / h before sliding to the surface.

After being in the air, the flying fish will develop a wide breast fin to keep floating for a long time. The flying behavior of flying fish is not the same as birds flapping their wings, but more like flying squirrels. Flying fish can penetrate drift speeds of up to 30km / hour. When in the air, flying fish hold their breath, as well as when we swim in water.

As their bodies begin to fall near the surface of the water, flying fish will move their tails to return to a higher position so they can stay flying. Their tails can also be used to change directions. With this technique, flying fish can survive above the water surface for up to 43 seconds and can travel a distance of up to 400m.

PREDATOR

Flying fish predators include mahi-mahi / dolphin fish, mackerel, tuna, swordfish, marlin and other large fish.

Flying fish like light at night, so they are easily caught by fishermen. Flying fish are mostly caught in Japan, Barbados and South Sulawesi and processed into various forms of commodities (fresh, salted, smoked, shredded, etc.).

FOSSIL

The oldest flying fish fossil was found in China in 2009, named Potanichthys xingyiensis with a length of 1.53m. It is estimated that these flying fish lived 235 - 242 million years ago.
